Vancouver Portrait Photographer

Whistler Portrait photography by Darby Magill Photography

Being a Vancouver portrait photographer over the last decade has taught me so much about how people interact with the camera. I always find it so interesting when I can feel vulnerable and honest with a complete stranger. Why is it that our guards can be let down through a simple feeling? For those who know me well they know how much I enjoy chatting with strangers. We share this amazing life with so many people, why wouldn’t we want to know more from one another? Sitting at a bus stop, or in an airport, and even at a bar, these in-between places have offered me many great conversations over the years, some of which I still think about.

Alanna and I have mutual friends and when we first met she seemed very intuitive and curious. A few months went by and then I received a message from her inquiring about my Wild Women sessions. These sessions are designed for Vancouver, Whistler, or Squamish clients looking to capture themselves through creative portraiture. They can be meant for boudoir, or a more natural representation to document the everyday. Her goal was to capture herself as natural as possible and create content for her new venture. Although she warned me that she was camera shy, our vulnerable conversations allowed me to capture the transitions and unique stillness within her. The second I began shooting we dove deep into life’s crazy mysteries and the decisions we make in order to experience growth. In these photos you will notice moments of play and moments of deep thinking. I wanted to share these images because I felt that these really reflect what I’m trying to do with my Wild Women sessions: getting women to open up, to free themselves from their own inhibitions, and also if they feel willing, to talk about their shit. Thank you Alanna for being you.
